International Cooperation of the Institute of Statistical Mathematics (ISM)
ISM promotes the following activities for international cooperation.
ISM established the International Advisory Board in 2007. Members of the board shall be academic experts with broad and deep insights into statistical mathematics. The members shall provide advice on important matters related to the ISM.
The Indian Institute of Statistics, India (ISI, भारतीय सांख्यिकीय संस्थान), the Institute of Statistical Mathematics, Japan (ISM, 情報・システム研究機構 統計数理研究所), and the Institute of Statistical Science Academia Sinica, Taiwan (ISSAS, 中央研究院統計科學研究所) signed an MOU. These three institutes have held an annual joint conference since 2007.
Established in May 2016 to honor the late Dr. Hirotugu Akaike, the 8th Director-General, this award offers opportunities for Japanese and international statistical scientists to connect, collaborate, support young researchers, and promote the development of statistical science.
The award lecture is presented twice a year during the Japanese Joint Statistical Meeting, a joint conference of organizations engaged in statistical science. Every two years, a distinguished researcher is invited to deliver the lecture in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the field. The lecture commemorates the legacy of Dr. Hirotugu Akaike and aims to inspire younger colleagues while contributing to the advancement of statistical science.
As of the end of October 2025, ISM has signed MOUs with 52 overseas universities and institutions.
