The 4th Akaike Memorial Lecture Award

The memorial lecture featuring the awardee of the 4th Akaike Memorial Lecture Award, Professor Aapo Hyvärinen, University of Helsinki, was held at the plenary session of the Japan Joint Statistical Meeting (JJSM) 2022 on September 5, 2022. JJSM was held in a hybrid format with online and in-person participation options due to the COVID-19. And Professor Hyvärinen, who lives in Helsinki, participated on-line, while the chair and discussants participated onsite.

Professor Tomoyuki Higuchi, Chuo University, President of the Japanese Federation of Statistical Science Associations (JFSSA) and the Japan Statistical Society (JSS), chaired the session. After Professor Hiroe Tsubaki, Director-General of the Institute of Statistical Mathematics (ISM), explained the Akaike Memorial Lecture Award and introduced Professor Hyvärinen, the Akaike Memorial Lecture was opened by Professor Hyvärinen.

After the lecture for an hour, two young researchers, Dr. Takeru Matsuda of RIKEN Neuroscience Center and Dr. Hiroshi Morioka of RIKEN Center for Integrated Research on Innovative Intelligence gave each presentation and designated discussion and Professor Hyvärinen gave a rejoinder. The active floor discussion was also held the rest of the time at the session.

The 4th Akaike Memorial Lecture in a hybrid format for the first time was a great success, with a total of 295 participants (64 on-site and 231 on-line), which the number of participants was the largest ever.

Although we were not able to invite the awardee to Japan this time as well as last time due to the COVID-19, we hope that we will have opportunities face-to-face academic exchange as soon as the situation settles down and that the Akaike Memorial Lecture will continue to be a chance for research and educational exchange in Japan and abroad. We also sincerely hope that the Akaike Memorial Lectures will continue to be an opportunity for the further development of young researchers and the field of statistical science. The next Akaike Memorial Lecture is scheduled to be held in 2024.
