The 3rd Akaike Memorial Lecture Award
The 3rd Akaike Memorial Lecture was held as the plenary session of the Japanese Joint Statistical Meeting (JJSM) 2020 on September 9, 2020.
JJSM of this year was held on line as a whole due to the world wide Novel Coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). The awardee and lecturer, Professor John Brian Copas, who is Emeritus Professor of the University of Warwick and Honorary Professor at University College London, gave his Akaike Memorial Lecture from UK thrtough on line.
Professor Manabu Iwasaki of Yokohama City University, who is assigned as Presidento of the Japanese Federation of Statistical Science Associations, was the chairman of the event. At first, Professor Hiroe Tsubaki, the Director-General of the Institute of Statistical Mathematics gave his welcome spheech including explanation of the Akaike Memorial Lecture Award and intrduction Professor Copas's contribution to the research field of statistical sciences.
Then Professor Copas gave his Akaike Memorial Lecture for an hour. Following the lecture, Professor Masataka Tagurifrom Yokohama City University, the discussant, presented his topics of the discussion, and Professor Copas rejoinedered. The eager floor discussion was also held using Q&A system of the on line webinar.
Although it was the very first online holding as the Akaike Memorial Lecture, there were over 270 participants and eager discussion. We really appreciate Professor Copas who kindly accepted to give his lecture on line and everybody who may concern this event.
We also hope that the COVID-19 pandemic will be settle down as soon as possible, that we will be able to hold the next Akaike Memorial Lecture on site. And we are really happy if iit would be the regular opportunity to promote international academic exchange and to develop the research field of statistical science for various researchers.
