The 5th Akaike Memorial Lecture Award

The 5th Akaike Memorial Lecture took place as a plenary session of the Japan Joint Statistical Meeting (JJSM) 2024 on September 2, 2024.

The awardee of the 5th Akaike Memorial Lecture Award and the speaker was Professor Arnaud Doucet, a professor at the University of Oxford, and a Senior Staff Research Scientist at Google DeepMind, who is a leading international expert in Monte Carlo methods and their application to Bayesian statistics and, more recently, in machine learning.

Professor Doucet received the commemorative plaque and the prize certificate of the award from Professor Hiroe Tsubaki, Director-General of the Institute of Statistical Mathematics and Professor Hiroshi Yadohisa, Director General of Japanese Federation of Statistical Science Associations at the award ceremony held just before the lecture.

Professor Doucet gave his lecture entitled “Schrödinger Bridges - Computation and Applications”. Then, two discussants, Professor Christophe Andrieu from University of Bristol and Professor Sumeetpal Singh from University of Wollongong)had their presentations. Then, Professor Doucet rejoined the discussion.

This Akaike Memorial Lecture was delivered in a hybrid format.103 people attended the lecture on-site and 180 people joined on-line webinar. It was held on-site after a six-year interval due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which the awardee and discussants from abroad all participated in this event on-site. Lively discussions continued until the end of the session.

We are grateful to all the people involved in this event. We sincerely hope that the Akaike Memorial Lecture will promote academic exchanges within and outside Japan and develop the community of statistical science continuously. The next Akaike Memorial Lecture will take place in FY2026.
