研究目的と成果（経過）の概要

This study aims at better understanding the relationships among software engineering capabilities and profitability, as a representative business performance, of software vendors in the drastically changing IT industry in Japan. To do so, we designed a survey on software engineering excellence (SEE) and administered it in 2005, 2006 and 2007 with the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. Then, we measured the SEE survey results with regard to seven factors: deliverables, project management, quality assurance, process improvement, research and development, human development, and customer contact. Based on the longitudinal modeling of the three-year SEE data and ten-year operating profit ratio of the 151 respondents to the SEE surveys, we significantly verified that IT firms who have excellent software engineering capabilities tend to improve their business performance in a medium- and long-term standpoint.
