The cooperative research project between Charles University, Prague, Czech and the Institute of Statistical Mathematics was conducted under the auspice of the Japan/Czech Joint Committee of Science and Technology formed by the governments of both countries.
The field of cooperation includes Computational Mathematics, Optimization Methods and Optimal Control, Markov Chain Models and Computational Aspects of Mathematical Modelling. In order to kick off the three years' project, Japan/Czech Workshop on Computational Methods for Applied Science cochaired by Kunio Tanabe, ISM and Ivo Marek, Charles Univ. was held at the Institute of Statistical Mathematics for the period from March 9 through 10, 1999, Tokyo. Invited lectures on the recent development in the field were given and discussed in an informal working atomosphere.
The titles of the talks include I.Mared(Charles Univ.), Comparison theorems for the convergence factor of iterative methods for singular matrices, T.Yamamoto(Ehime Univ.), On the accuracy of a finite difference solution of a Dirichlet problem, R. Jirousek(Univ. of Economics), Computational procedures in graphical Markov models, Y. Liu(Curtin Univ.), A computational methods for a class of optimal switching control problems,

Tanabe(ISM), Certain linear algebraic identities usefull in statistics, J. Holenda(Univ. of West Bohemia), Computing generic Jordan canonical from, M. Vlach(Charles Univ.), Local approximations of sets in optimization theory, J.Mockor(Univ. of Ostrava), Construction and error estimation of of locally linear fuzzy models, Y. Miyasato(ISM), New Generation of Adaptive Control --- Robustness and Optimality ---,
