Risk Research Network and Partner Institutes
In the increasing uncertainty of today’s society, our safety and security in the face of risk have become an issue of national importance. For this purpose, we need risk analysis and management that are grounded on scientific evidence. This foundation is supported by risk science research. In reality, the range of risk issues is wide and diverse: safety of traffic and nuclear power; financial, economic, insurance, and pension risks; global environmental and local environmental risks; earthquakes, typhoons, tsunami, fires, and other natural disasters; issues related to gigantic systems and product reliability; corporate and organizational governance and security issues; and many more. Needless to say, active research is already being undertaken in each of these fields.
However, there are methodologies and techniques that are common to all fields in terms of quantitative and mathematical approaches to uncertainty. We therefore believe that interactions between separate fields, as well as between the applied and basic fields, are beneficial. More especially, we believe that the potential is high for gaining considerable synergistic effects between the different sciences, through cross-disciplinary research exchanges using the common language of statistical science.
The Risk Research Network was established in 2005 by a group of organizations that agree with this idea. The Network facilitates free exchange and conducts various levels of collaboration and cooperation between research institutes concerned with risk analysis, with the aim of developing risk analysis techniques and helping address the issues faced by these research institutes. The Risk Analysis Research Center has focused on the establishment and operation of the Network. Risk research spans a wide range of research fields; unlike those of conventional Center Of Excellence (COE) research institutions, the Network aims to build a Network Of Excellence (NOE) as a network-based research institution.
