08 Statistical distributions of symmetry groups to predict crystal structures Project Leader
Yoshiaki Itoh

The symmetry of crystalline substances are represented by using the 230 space groups. ICSD is a database for complete structural information of non-metal inorganic crystals. We sequentially define species by considering i) space group, ii) chemical component and iii) unit cell volume, and obtained the statistical distribution of the space groups. The statistical distribution of the space groups strongly depends on the number of chemical formula unit in a unit cell as well as the chemical formula itself, which will be useful to predict the geometrical structure of crystalline substances from chemical formula.

09 Toward Wet Implementation of Stochastic Optimization for Protein Engineering Project Leader
Hiroshi Someya

Protein engineering is of increasing importance. However, an appropriate procedure for the protain engineering has not been established due to the unknown relation between base sequences (or amino acid sequences) and functions. This study discussed whether a stochastic optimization algorithm can be applied to the protain engineering.

10 Research on effective use of information related to statistical science Project Leader
Yasaumasa Baba

This reserch aims at a data base related to information of statistical science, a system appropriate to find innovative theme on statistics from consulting, and a human network effective for responding to urgent need of statistical knowledge. One of the methods related to human network is to use a map of researchers and we are collecting geological information of researchers.
