Every year at the ISM, we set up multiple categories and accept applications for project researches within the Institute. For this year (2004), we have set up the following 3 categories:

1. Prediction and Knowledge discovery
2. Management of Uncertainties and Risks
3. Computational Inference

category
Prediction and Knowledge Discovery Index
The prediction and control of the complicated random phenomen a have become an important issue in a wide variety of fields. The statistical methods and program packages developed by ISM, have been applied to analysis of financial time series data, image processing of astronomical data, processing of earthquake data, automatic control of ships and vessels and vibration control of vehicles. In recent years, we are engaged in research in discovering useful knowledge and information obtained from the massive data coming from life, earth and space science.

Management of Uncertainties and Risks Index
The modern society is faced with environmental change, advancement of technology, transformation of economic system and social change, therefore dealing with the uncertain future rationally, and scientifically evaluating and controlling the risks is sought after. At ISM, we are working on research on rational monitoring of environment, analysis of environmental and earthquake data and financial risks.
category
Computational Inference Index
The development of statistical models and computers has made it possible for us to get new scientific information from indirect data deriving from a phenomenon which are unable to be seen or observed directly, and to calculating information unable to see directly. At ISM, we are working on research concerning the Markov chain Monte Carlo method, the particle filter method, dynamic inverse problem solutions, optimization, genetic, linear programming and learning algorithms.
