概要: Despite decades of research devoted to this question, we still do not know how mainshocks cause aftershocks. In this presentation I show recent research that attempts to isolate static and dynamic stressing signals so that we can learn more about their abilities to trigger other earthquakes. We hope someday to combine physical models with statistical models for forecasting, but I show that the physical models still have problems when used prospectively.
